[ The sheepish look on his face is not one that he's proud of, especially because of what's happening immediately behind him. There's a dog on its back, all four legs in the air, and its chewing on the rope of his lasso. He only wishes that he could say this has happened to him before. ]

If anyone's seeing this, I could use a little help to get out of this...situation.

[ The dog barks. ]

I don't know if I'll get arrested for this, but I think this animal might belong to someone and is lost, so any distractions for the police would be very appreciated.

[ Another bark, like the dog approves and is enjoying its upside-down antics, kicking its legs in the air like it enjoys it. With a wary look back at the screen, Vasquez gives one last pleading look of help in a single expression. ]

I think you just adopted a dog, actually.

[ no, no. no, he'd really been trying to avoid thinking of that, because the mutt didn't have a collar, but that doesn't mean he didn't slip away and escape!

which probably makes him more of vasquez's type of dog than anything. ]

No, I didn't, I was just walking and I thought it would be good to have some practice.

[ meanwhile, behind him, the dog has managed to lie on its side, panting and nosing the lasso towards vasquez like a leash. vasquez is ignoring him, pointedly, he is. ]

Yeah, I think you're going to have a hard time convincing the dog of that. I think he likes you.

( that, or the dog is into weird bouts of s&m, but that's a little too much for a first conversation. or any conversation, for that matter. )

What's his name?

He can like me all he wants, I don't like him.

[ Which is maybe a bit harsh, because honestly, Vasquez has barely thought of a dog, so mostly he's just irritated that it won't leave him alone. ]

How should I know his name? He's not mine and he has nothing on him to say what it is.

( If she looks a little endeared, please don't mind her. Caitlin doesn't have time for a dog back home, but she's always thought having one would be lovely. Dogs are the best. )

No. No, that's...no.

[ He's laughing like it's a joke, a terrible joke, but holding the device in both hands, he squints at the girl making such bad jokes before glancing to the dog, who doesn't seem to be struggling out of the lasso. ]

Look, I'll show you.

[ Kneeling down to start loosening it, he manages to get it undone without anyone seeing (a miracle). Unfortunately, when he does, the dog doesn't go anywhere, so much as he licks Vasquez's ear.

So, you know, it's a good thing he's not armed right now. ]

I'm going to shoot you.

[ He's not specifying who the 'you' is here. ]

( In spite of herself, Caitlin laughs but her expression is caught between amusement and sympathy. )

Look at him go...

( Now she is joking. )

Aww, come on, he likes you! Look at him.

[ Vasquez doesn't want to look at him, he doesn't want to look at the dog, because he knows what will happen. His damn soft heart will make him want to look and keep the dog and he can't do that. Being responsible is not something he wants to do. ]

I don't care if he likes me, I lasso'ed him to practice and to stop him from wandering into the street, that doesn't give him the right to like me.

[ The dog barks at this exact moment like the little puta is trying to disrespect him. ]

[ Steph snorts a laugh. ]

You've been adopted.

[ Vasquez is glowering into the camera, shaking his head. ]

If I've been adopted, he can abandon me anytime. I don't want to be responsible for anything.

[ Not to mention, he'd only been trying to lasso the dog before it wandered into traffic for practice, not because he cared. ]

You can always take it to a shelter. As far as I know dogs haven't figured out how to work doors yet.

There's one problem with that. I don't know where the shelter is.

[And maybe there's a stubborn part of him that's willing to ask for help on an open video network, but not to a person right in front of him. He's not sure how he'd react to any disdain or disapproval if it's right in front of him and a fight isn't what he needs today. ]

It was that I put the lasso over him or he was going to be a pancake-dog in traffic, and I don't want to have to peel that off the ground.

[ He's not exactly happy with the situation, which is clear, but the dog seems plenty eager to bark and offer its opinion that it's enjoying the whole thing. Vasquez sighs, long-suffering. ]

I thought maybe I would be more in trouble for tying up a dog in public. Do people not care about this?

Point made, and I can't say I blame you for not wanting to be the city's trash man. Saving Fido will win you some brownie points with the city, at least.

[silver linings, perhaps? mick's never had the pleasure of interacting with vasquez before, but he assumes most people are itching to get back home and do whatever it is that brought them here in the first place. it's the sort of thing that drove him the first time he'd stayed in a place like this and it's what drew him to cadelle once he'd come face to face with the legends failings.]

As long as you're not keeping the dog tied up, I'd say you're clear. [mick pauses and scratches his head, collecting his thoughts for a moment.] You're not planning on ditching him are you?

[He snorts when it comes to being pleased with this city, but the truth is, seeing as it's so much of an improvement over his situation back home, he probably should be trying to get in good so that he's not kicked out. If that even happens.]

Why would I keep the dog? Is that something people do here?

[There's a heavy worry in his voice, because that sounds a lot like the implication that he should be keeping the dog and Vasquez doesn't exactly want to do this. After all, he can barely be responsible for himself, sometimes.]

[ Once in a while Jax is the Worst. And right now this one of those moments. Excuse as he guffaws over this entire situation. This is cute, man. How can you say no to such an adorable dog? ]

[He makes an unimpressed face, though whether it's because of Jax or the dog, he's not saying. He's still extremely unhappy, so maybe he's just going to keep glaring at the both of them for a while. Nothing is adorable about this, he thinks, nothing.]

I don't have to keep it just because I stopped it from getting flattened. Do I? Is that a thing in the future?

[ He's unrepentant. Okay, mostly. He shrugs in the face of your glare, Vasquez. That said, Jax does manage to bite back the rest of broad smile. Mostly. ]

No. That's not a thing. [ However, i's hard to entirely smother the chuckle in his voice. ] But why don't you? The dog looks pretty sold on you. Dogs not your kind of pet? [ Come on, Vasquez. How can you say no to that face?

Not the Jax's amusement face. But the dog's highly adorable expression. ]

Nothing is my kind of pet, I don't do responsibility like this.

[The very thought of having to take care of something every day and have it depend on you, take your money and your time, it's something that he doesn't want to do not because he doesn't want to, but because he's not sure how to take care of anyone but himself.

That's the terrifying part.]

What about you? Do you want a slightly stupid dog, who wanders into traffic?

I don't think the police will really care. But you can bring him to the shelter if you want?

[where he knows that they'll do everything they can to have him take the little guy back out the doors with him. there's plenty of animals who need a good home here.]

[Vasquez looks at the dog, who's looking back at him and yipping with an excitement that Vasquez definitely doesn't share. Giving it a wary look, then the other man, he thinks that he could do that.]

Shelter, yes, whatever means I don't have to take care of him and he doesn't wander into a street. Where's the shelter?

[The laughing isn't appreciated, especially not from Claire of all people. He spends a lot of time staring at her, giving her an unimpressed look.]

You should be glad you're not near me, so I can't take the lasso and put it around you for calling me adorable.

[ That... does nothing to help with the laughter. She lets it taper off into a grin, bringing her hand up to prop her chin up.
