[when the feed opens, it's a shot of a very uncomfortable looking scott mccall. dressed in a pair of jeans and a long-sleeved shirt, scott looks like he's been rolling in a field. which...is a lot closer to the truth than you'd think. there's a leash in one of his hands, the whole thing clearly being filmed by a second person. someone who sounds far too amused by what's happening here. so it's around a laugh that the mystery voice prompts a quiet "go on". ... right.]
Um. Hi. Uh-- My name's Scott. McCall. [wow, okay. trying this again. don't mind him while he just clears his throat and--] I'm Scott, and I'm new here? [more laughing because "that's not meant to sound like a question, kid"] --oh. Right.
Okay, my name's Scott, and I arrived a few weeks ago. I've taken a job at the animal shelter here. [he's about to continue on, but--] Sorry. Best Friends Animal Rescue. And I've been asked to see if there's anyone else out there who'd be able to lend a hand.
[there's some whining then, and scott looks down to his feet. a moment later, and he crouches out of shot to pick up the ball of fur at his feet. one slobbery lick to his face, and there goes the discomfort. now he's on to business. with a huge smile on his face, of course.]
There's a lot of little guys here who could use a friend. Even if you can't take an animal permanently, we're looking for people who'd be able to foster them for a bit. A couple of months maybe. Just so they can get out of here for a while.
I mean, it's great here. It really is. But it's not the same as giving them a family.
So, I guess. What I'm asking is: is there anybody out there who'd be interested in taking care of an animal for a while? We've got dogs, cats, rabbits, a guinea pig. Then there are also a couple of rats, a few hamsters, and some gerbils if you don't have space for any of the others.
If you're interested, you need to come by for an assessment with one of the team. I can't do that part, but if you've got any questions, I can try to help.
Um...thank you. [and then his gaze moves off-screen as he adds--] Was that okay? [though you'll never hear the answer to that because that's when the feed is finally cut.]

Then there's a smile, one that's slightly hesistant. ]
Ah, hey. I'm Buffy. I have questions. What would this assessment involve? Because I'll be honest, I've never had a pet. So it's a bit like me being a long time fan of the idea of a pet, but zero experience with the whole actual having a pet. Only ever one of those baby egg things, you know, for biology class?

I don't know about adopting, but if you're hard up for fostering, I could maybe manage that? I've never tried.
[ The "but how hard can it be? I'm a werewolf" is implied. ]

The assessment? It's uh- There's two parts. When you come here, it's mostly to check that you know how to look after whatever animal you're looking for. The second part is when one of the team go and make sure your home is safe for the animal.
If there's anything you don't know though, it's alright. We can show you everything you need to know, and we can help animal-proof your home too.

right.]
They'll want to meet you first. And-- [okay, how to put this...]
...do animals like you?

[ She cocked her head to the side, and bit her bottom lip for a second as she fell quiet. Then she was looking at the screen again. ]
So be honest, what do you actually recommend as a pet for a novice. Well, less than a novice. Is there anything below novice? Do I just start out with a hamster and work my way up?

Probably not cats, but I don't know. Barry's dogs don't mind me. I don't know if I'd go as far as to say they like me...
[ But then again, it's not like he's bonded with Barry's dogs...they're Barry's dogs. ]

Nah, I wouldn't go for a young one. I think I'd like to rescue an older one. I hate the idea that they'd die in some shelter.
[ Possibly, someone is carrying some guilt about leaving his old man at the hospice. Even if it was a great one. ]
I think I could keep a dog with me at B-Sides. It's not the busiest of stores, and there's a lot of backroom space. I could walk it a couple times a day that way, and it'd never be alone.
no subject
Honestly? You might be better off spending a day here with the animals first instead. That way you could learn more about them and their needs, and you could see which type would work best for you after.
no subject
[which...was kind of upsetting really. considering he's planning on a future that revolves around animals, he doesn't want them to feel uncomfortable around him.]
It took a while, but I think they're used to me now. I wasn't sure if-- Is that normal?
[look, you are the only werewolf he knows, derek. you'll just have to deal with the questions]

There's a few dogs here that've...been here way too long. Everyone seems to want puppies, so... [it's why he'd been given a puppy to film with. something cute and fluffy to tug on the heartstrings. never mind that he's made friends with one of the oldest dogs there.]
You know, they've got a husky here who's the biggest softie in the whole building. She's been here for years now, just because she's lost a leg.
[wait!]
Oh man, there's also this pit bull? He got dumped here because he's "dangerous". [and yes, those are legit airquotes he makes there.] He wouldn't hurt a fly. All he wants is someone to sleep on and he's happy. You don't get any of that with puppies. Not till they get older.
[look all he's saying is older dogs need love too. come adopt them all, baby.]
no subject
And please stop me if I try. Like, I mean it. Don't let me. I don't need more than one, and I'm pretty sure I'll go into cuteness overload. So just stop me.

[ He might know werewolf stuff, but bitten werewolf stuff is still pretty new territory. He's only been familiar with the way things work on that end of the spectrum for a couple of years. All the werewolves he grew up with were born that way. There are things he can speculate but might never really know for certain and the way the animals at the clinic and, apparently, here at the shelter initially reacted to Scott is one of those things.
It could be that Scott's bitten. It could be that Scott's not comfortable being a werewolf yet and they can sense a skittish, powerful animal in him. It could be that Derek can go full wolf and that changes his scent away from human almost entirely and is therefore less confusing to the animals. There's no way for him to know for sure. Not that that's reassuring for Scott.
On the plus side, Derek is significantly more patient these days and he has a respect for Scott that the other man has earned in Derek's time, even though he's not there yet in his own. ]
I wouldn't worry about it too much as long as they're fine now, though, man.

I love puppies, but I've never had a dog before and it's not like I've got all the time in the world. And older dogs deserve to live out the rest of their lives happily.
[ Yup, definitely feeling guilty about Joe here. It's all good. No need to mention anything, he's fine.
At the mention of a pitbull, he perks up immediately. ]
Could I come? Visit? I love pitbulls. They never scared me, and they're so cute. I was thinking of coming over, have a look. Would it be okay? I'd like to meet him.
no subject
Not that I'm complaining! [a rushed addition as he looks off-screen. though his panicked look is only responded to with a laugh. one day he'll learn that they really do like having him around the place. no matter what he says.]
...I think one of the dogs may have adopted me though.
no subject
[not that it'd stopped them offering him a job when he'd asked. as upset as the animals may have been at the start, the people there had seemed to take a liking to him fairly quickly. winning the animals over hadn't taken too long after that.
the trouble is, he has no idea how well they'll react to someone like derek. he's not exactly a people person, so quite how derek's meant to win over the rehoming team, he isn't sure.]
Do you...need me to introduce you to the team? [or at least warn them in advance]
no subject
[because the sooner he comes to meet the dogs, the sooner he may (possibly) end up taking one of them back with him. whatever it takes to find the animals there a loving home.]

[ He's not here to argue. Derek extended his olive branch via explanation of where he's at with their relationship to one another in his time and an implied invitation for Scott to explore the potential friendship.
He's not going to bend over backwards for the kid trying to get Scott to be pack again. It didn't go well the first time and the whole point of coming here was to get away from Beacon Hills, so it doesn't make sense to replay the past like that. If Scott wants him around, then he's around. He'll leave it at that and it'll probably be appreciated, if Derek had to guess. ]
I think I can handle it. I promise, I packed my big boy pants when I came here, Scott. I'm telling you, the person you think I am? I'm not that guy. It's been a long time. If you don't want my help, I won't be offended. If you do, then I'll stop by the shelter and meet whoever and sign whatever and do whatever. You tell me. I've been kind of done stepping on toes for a couple of years now, so I don't really want to start doing it again, you know?

[ She tilted her head a little at the reaction before smiling reassuringly when he laughed. She was pretty sure he was wanted there. Or at least she was only going by what she'd seen. ] I didn't think you were, so it's okay. Breathe.
Yeah? Oh, the dog from before? Does he have a name?
no subject
[ He's going to text Izzy and ask if she wants to come along and meet a possible new roommate for him and Robbie. He should also... ask Robbie... ]
Yeah. Gotta talk to my roommate and all, see if it's all square with him, and then, I'll come by.
