( This is a little outside her comfort zone; the whole initiating friendships thing. She needs to do it, though. So far, she's really only gone out Laurel as far as making friends with women goes. A girl cannot survive on male friendship alone. )

I need some girl time and I do not have My Girls here. So I need My Cadelle Girls. I'm not going to say I'm holding auditions because that's lame and reminds me too much of work back home, but...I am recruiting. Let's put it that way.

To the first female who can tell me where the nearest/best spa is, I will personally pay for you to join me there for a couple of hours.

To the first female who calls dibs on coming with me to Glazed and Deja Brew for some sugary happiness, my treat.

And to the first female who might be into having a little more risque shopping trip, I'm buying if you'll go with me to Good Vibrations.

( And then she'll officially be broke as fuck, but she's actively looking for a job that she can stand, too, so she's hopeful that this setback will be Worth It since she'll be back on her feet in no time. )

And so as not to be exclusionary, any and all males are invited to take me up on any of those offers for company, but I'm not made of money here, so you're buying your own :P

Midafternoon pick me up? Maybe around 2?

[Laurel liked her! And she needs friends that aren't from her future, so Jo is a good place to start. Especially since they're neighbors.]

Yeah that works for me. I don't have a car, so I'll meet you and we can hop on public transit if that's okay?

( She hopes that's okay... That's something she should probably eventually look into, actually, if she's going to be here a while; a car... )

That's fine! I don't have a car here either.

[It's been kind of nice, taking advantage of public transportation again.]

[And we transition this to action with Laurel waiting for Jo at the appropriate meeting place?]

( By the time 2:00 rolls around, Jo decides that it's probably just easier to meet Laurel at Laurel's place because they never really established a meeting spot, in retrospect, and they're neighbors, anyway.

So it's a few minutes before two when Jo knocks on Laurel's door and waits patiently outside it. )

[And the door will fly open with a bright smile from Laurel but she's also looking a bit frazzled. Who has two thumbs and lost track of the time because she was studying?

This girl.]

Hey! Just give me a minute to grab my shoes and coat.

( Jo smiles a little and shrugs, leaning against the door jamb, casually. )

That's cool, no rush.

[She's not going far, she's just going to hop around a bit as she tugs on her shoes.]

I got caught up in my studying and lost track of the time. Who knew mutiversal law could actually be interesting?

That actually sounds interesting. Outside my wheelhouse, but still interesting.

( Jo waits patiently for Laurel to finish getting ready and to lead the way out, so that Jo isn't accidentally oushing her to hurry up when there's no reason to hurry. )

[And eventually she grabs her coat and starts to lead the way back out into the hallway.]

Ah, see, that is definitely my wheelhouse. I'm in law school back home, and I figure there's no reason to stop while I'm here. Might as well keep learning.

( Jo follows closely beside her and nods, looking impressed. )

I don't know if I'd go to school here if I hadn't already finished my degree... I think it'd be hard because trying to juggle a job and school...I don't know. The very idea of it kind of freaks me out. I'd way overstress myself, I bet, but I think it's awesome that you can. Or are you just going to school and living on the stipend...?

I'm not officially enrolled or anything.

[She's still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her time, but she is looking for some kind of internship.]

But I did the whole job and school thing during undergrad, so I think that I could figure it out again. Right now, I'm just trying things out though.

You're not sure what you want to do, or you're not sure what you want to do while you're here, specifically?

( Those are two very different things, in Jo's opinion. )

Oh, here.

[She probably should have been more clear there.]

I'm in law school back home. The law is pretty much the love of my life.

[Unfortunately.]

Oh, gotcha. Well that's cool.

( It wouldn't be a career choice for Jo, by any stretch, but that doesn't mean she doesn't appreciate its worth, generally speaking. )

My job is the love of my life, too. I'll miss it sooner than later, I'm sure.

What do you do back home?

[Because they're still getting to know each other, and if Jo gives her the leeway, she will babble about the law for the entirety of their outing.]

Me? Oh, I'm a personal assistant. My best friend is an actor and I'm his PA. It would probably be a terrible job if not for the fact that my boss is my best friend. He makes it fun.

( Jo could probably do the same, but she chooses to cut herself off there. If Laurel wants to hear more, she'll ask. )

Oh, that does sound fun.

[She remembers Tommy's actresses-and-models phase, and she didn't really think they were the kind of actors that would have been a good boss, but if her boss was already her best friend, that's always a good place to start.]

I've always wandered about jobs like that, but my sister used to tell me I was too serious to ever try them. And ... she was more than a little right.

It's not really, like, a frivolous job. I mean, if you mean mine. I kind of run his entire life. I keep his finances straight. I handle his entire schedule, not just his professional one. I work, like...on average, eighty hour weeks.

( She tries not to sound offended by the idea that someone would be too serious to do her job. Someone could definitely be too flippant, but just because she has fun doing her job hardly means that it's easy. )

I think people get the wrong idea about it from pop culture, maybe. It's not an easy job. ( Then, she shrugs. ) But what you do is really important, too; not to take away from that.

Oh, no. I didn't mean it like that.

[She didn't mean to imply that Jo didn't work hard or that her job was frivolous.]

I meant that ... my dad says I've been trying to change the world since I was six. Me doing something that personal and one on one is ... not really me.

[Is that less rude? She hopes it's a little less rude.]

( Jo's eyebrows lift slightly and she nods. She's not sure that the other explanation is a whole lot better, but she can tell that Laurel is at least trying, so Jo decides to just let it go. She might not be changing the world, but she'd like to think she's still important. To Dave, at least, she's indispensable. The only reason she's here is because he won't notice she's gone. )

That's why I originally went to nursing school. I guess it just ended up not really being my thing. But at least I have the degree so there's a fallback career; I'd just have to take refreshers to learn new advancements.

[She's glad that Jo at least understands that she's trying. She isn't actively trying to put her career choice down - people should do what makes them happy. It's just that Laurel knows she wouldn't be happy being in that kind of world.

She wants to bring justice to those who think they can run from it. But since she's letting it go, so will Laurel.]

I should probably have one of those. In case I flame out on my law career.

( Jo huffs her amusement and shrugs. )

I definitely didn't mean to have one, but I'd be lying if I said it doesn't feel like it could come in handy someday, you know? If you think there's something else you'd be into, I'd recommend it. Can't hurt, anyway.

No, you're right. I'd become a cop, but I think my dad would stick me on desk duty and never actually let me on patrol.

[A beat as that may be confusing.]

My dad is a detective in the Starling City Police Department. He hasn't exactly been in favor of his daughters following in his footsteps.
