[The video opens on Magnus, hair a little more mussed than usual, eyeliner in place but smudged, clearly working hard and distracted.]

Hello, everyone, I am Magnus Bane, and I have something of a dilemma.

[The camera swings around to a table with a small cauldron on it, a set of brass scales, and several small bottles and jars, most of them empty. Magnus appears again, keeping the bookshelf in view over his shoulder.]

Of course I brought my spellbook with me, and my brewing equipment—never trust a cauldron you haven't seasoned yourself—but where might one go to buy potion ingredients? I'm low on… [He looks over his shoulder, assessing the supplies he's brought with him.] ...saffron threads, vampire hair, grave dirt, lavender...well, everything. Space was at a premium and I'm afraid I couldn't bring my inventory with me.

[The phone comes with Magnus, floats with Magnus on a cloud of blue smoke, as he walks away from his brewing headquarters, and now in the background can be seen half-unpacked boxes, the walls hung with sweeping red and blue silks. There's stuff everywhere, far too much for the apartment's size, but the image steadies as Magnus turns again, sweeping out his arms.] I only need the basics for now. And if you need something, do let me know. No love potions, but I conjure up a wicked energy booster for mornings after. Or nights before.

[With a wink, Magnus snaps his fingers and the video ends in a colorful shimmer of light before the screen goes black.]

[Wanda replies with a half smile, amused at this guy already.]

Those are the basics? [They don't sound very basic to her. Vampire hair?? What on earth.] What else are basics?

[Just curious.]

You'd be amazed at how often a recipe calls for things like that. What else...

[He's made a list, which he picks up now to consult.]

Wheat stalks, dandelion milk, wool. But it needs to be raw wool. Lemon juice is a must-have, I've tried substituting but that's a dangerous game, spell substitutions. In a pinch, very fresh eggs are surprisingly versatile, but they aren't exactly something I can keep on hand.

[ Thor's face reflects his slight confusion at the list of ingredients. His hair is partially tied back but the blond strands still fall around his face as he leans over where he has placed the camera.

Magic was always more his mother's and brother's specialty, not his. He was truly Odin's son in that he preferred waging into a battle. Not to mention his brother's constant trickery had left a sour taste in his mouth for such things. ]

I have yet to notice an apothecary if there is one.

[Magnus heaves a sigh and takes the phone with him so the perspective skews wildly as he flops into a chair draped in more silks and scarves.]

I suppose it's the old fashioned way, then. At least I'll get out into the fresh air. You seem like an outdoorsy type. Are there any open fields of wildflowers? Waterfalls with caves behind them?

[ alec debates with himself whether or not he should respond. he wants to give magnus space, as promised, but he also wants to make sure he's keeping up with his own suggestion magnus doesn't go at this alone. he may be a centuries old warlock with too much experience up his sleeve, but he's never belittled alec in such a way as to demean what he may be able to bring to the table, despite his young years. ]

[ he looks amused. ] Something tells me you could've brought your entire inventory with you if you really wanted to.

[ he's the high warlock of brooklyn, after all. magnus could easily create his own bag to toss his inventory into it. ]

[ in respect to his quest: ]

I can help you with the lavender.

[He'd been wondering if Alec paid attention to the network, or if he'd hear from him, and it's impossible to hide the way his smile softens a little. Space should mean distance, but this is sort of like distance, and it makes his heart hurt a little less.]

Oh, probably. But it's been so long since I set up shop somewhere entirely new, I honestly didn't think of it until I was almost packed already. You have lavender?

[Color him surprised. Pleased, but surprised. Other ingredients he might have expected could come from Alec, but the lavender isn't one of them.]

[ don't look so surprised, magnus. even now and here, alec has a few surprises still tucked somewhere up his sleeve. ]

[ he warms at magnus' reception, wondering why he'd been thinking of the worst possible scenario. regardless of what's happened, he's always felt safe around magnus, even in the beginning before alec had understood anything about himself or the high warlock of brooklyn. ]

[ lips curving upward, ] Yeah. Lavender's meant to help you sleep. I bought a lot of it when I first arrived. I don't mind giving you some of it.

Really? [She nods. So it's the butter and flour of the magic world.]

That is quite a list. I don't do that kind of magic -- [if she can even call what she does a form of magic? Who knows. Alien stones, so complicated.] -- but yeah, I could see how substitutions might not go over so great.

[Magic, such an exact art.]

There's got to be a market around here where you can get those things. I'm new, so I haven't quite got the lay of the land yet myself entirely, but if I see one... [She can let him know.]

( kimberly looks... well, non-plussed is the kind way to phrase it, but it's not exactly something so refined. mostly she just can't help the vague air of disbelief that creeps over her as she stares into the screen of her phone. )

Right. ( it's not alright, but what can you do? ) No love potions, got it.

Can you make it stop raining, or is that too much to ask for?

There is a forest.

[ Thor couldn't help the way his eyebrows went up at being referred to as an 'outdoorsy type'. Was that what he was? He had taken to the beach here rather well. ]

I'll admit I haven't spent as much time exploring the outskirts as I perhaps should have. The ocean can be very distracting.

I am very for real! And entirely out of vampire hair, none of my usual donors are here. You don't happen to know any?

Normally I wouldn't mind, I'm rather adept at them, but they're against the rules here.

[He sighs, then looks thoughtful, and the phone comes with him to the window as he looks out at the rain.]

Make it stop? I don't think so. Weather effects are usually a side effect of other spells. I could cast a spell that keeps you from getting wet, if that would help. Why, is this an unusual rain? Is it not the rainy season here?

[When it comes to potion brewing and collecting the various ingredients he needs for spellwork, no Shadowhunter will be the first person Magnus thinks of, not even Alec. It's a pleasant surprise, except...]

You've had trouble sleeping?

[Magnus takes a seat at the small table he's placed by the window, with a little smile.]

Thank you, Alexander. I'd appreciate that.

Potions aren't my favorite type of magic, but a warlock needs to make a living. ...wait.

[Magnus looks delighted, sitting back and letting the phone float so both his hands are visible.]

You don't do that kind of magic, but you do magic? Are you a warlock too? What type of magic do you do? I'd love to hear about it, if you'd like to share.

A forest will come in handy. Good thing I packed waterproof boots.

[Well, he looks like more of an outdoorsy type than Magnus, with the hair and the beard and the muscles and everything.]

The ocean will also come in handy. I take it the beach is the place to be, around here?

( her mouth moves to echo the words — rather adept at... — but the sound never materializes. it only becomes audible with a drug out, ) Riiiiiight. ( a twitch at the corner of her mouth; kimberly tries her best to stifle the Bored Teenager vibe before continuing on. )

I'm not exactly a weather girl but I'm pretty sure this isn't normal. The whole "unintentional confession" thing isn't your usual paradise-on-not-Earth shtick.

[ before you even ask, yes, he has a rune for conversational parkour. he leaps right over the question with a little kick to his ankle. ]

Let me know when you want it. [ perhaps he would've invited himself over in the past ... who are we kidding? alec practically lived in magnus' apartment in new york. he invited himself over to admire the view of the city. he'd invited himself over for leftovers. he'd done so without thinking — each time he wanted company (or didn't want company) he always went to magnus'. it's a little strange to think that now he can't even allow his feet to move in that direction. ]

[ his brows knit together for a moment. ] Are you brewing something?

Nah, I'm not overly connected to vampires.
I don't even know if we have vampires here.
Which is a worrying and unsettling thought cause why would I know? They only come out at night and I usually come out like noonish.

Magnus!

( The image on his phone is a decidedly orange one, but that's because Clary's hair seems to be a barometer of her excitement. The rest of her face tells it too, bright eyed and beaming as she looks at her friend through the screen. She's missed him. ) I didn't even know you were here. When did you show up? Are you okay? Where are you?

( He's clearly been around long enough to gather supplies, and that is clearly an oversight on Clary's part because she could have been helping. )

Well, I'll come out and support the cause sometime. [when she has a job and can buy stuff from him.]

It's ... a work in progress. I can move things, telekinesis, mostly. [She, uh, leaves out the telepathic part.] I feel like I'm still learning, despite having had the abilities for a few years now, since i seem to be getting more refined as time goes on, I'm sure there's more untapped potential floating around. [But she has no teachers, so, alas.] No pun intended.

What do you need grave dirt for?

[Just out of curiosity.]

[Clary isn't the only one beaming, in fact if Clary were anywhere nearby she'd be getting a big hug right now, maybe even the kind where she's swung around in a circle. But unfortunately he'll need to make do with a bright smile, with a little relief. Knowing some of his friends are here goes a long way toward making this place feel like home.]

I'm fine, I'm fine. I'm in the Beta building, only just arrived, don't worry, you're not at all out of the loop.

Grave dirt is one of those catch-all ingredients. It's for grounding. Like salt.

Unintentional confession? That sounds like a curse.

[He squints suspiciously at the rain before tugging a dark red velvet curtain across the window with a twitch of his fingers and a blue blossom of magic.]

Nothing I can do about that, I'm afraid, not without knowing who's cast the curse. I hope it hasn't revealed too many secrets. And that I have "unpacking" as a reason not to go out until it's cleared up.
