Hi. I'm... Dr. Spencer Reid. At home, I work with the FBI as a behavioral analyst, or profiler. I'm trying to figure out what to... do with myself here.

[ Reid is a thin, young-looking man with too-wide eyes and nearly shoulder-length unkempt hair. That combined with the cardigan, tie, and lightly patterned button-up makes him look extremely dated. It's not hard to believe him as a federal employee by clothes alone, although his age is constantly remarked upon.

He doesn't sound uncertain about addressing the wider audience of the network-- although he is, and especially about using technology this way-- but he does sound like he's choosing his words with care, enunciating clearly and with even, unhurried pacing. ]

If there's anyone that currently works for the local police, I'd like to speak with you regarding whether you think there's a use for my skills in that environment. I have done field work, but I wouldn't say it's my strong suit. Otherwise I'm considering taking up teaching at the university. I've been a TA for undergraduate classes before, although I think I'm better suited to leading graduate-level seminars. If anyone currently takes classes there, it would be helpful to hear about your experiences.

... I also noticed they're looking for librarians at the public library. Uh. I don't think that alone would keep me... sufficiently occupied, but. I could do it.

I'd like to optimize my time here by putting my skills wherever they're most needed. So I'm open to other suggestions. And-- looking for a physical therapist. And possibly an orthopedist. Thank you.

So what does an FBI profiler actually do?

[ Prepare for a full and complete answer. Reid gets this question a lot while touring colleges helping Rossi sell students on the FBI, so he's ready. ]

The Behavioral Analysis Unit provides support to all levels of law enforcement across the United States on cases they don't feel equipped to handle with their resources alone. Typically the cases we work include serial murders, sexual assaults, abductions, and anything else requiring a time-sensitive response or where locals have hit a wall on leads.

The techniques we employ include victimology, psychology, statistics, and geographic profiling, along with more standard law enforcement techniques such as crime scene analysis. We compose a profile, a list of the offender's likely characteristics, and present it to the local police to assist in their investigation. We also provide on-the-ground support with interviewing persons of interest to the investigation and responding to crises.

It's... more or less, whatever's called for on the case.

So does that involve also looking for patterns among victims to try and figure out possible motives and suspects, or is that more the detectives who do that work?

No, that's pretty much exactly it. If a detective feels like they aren't equipped to handle that on a certain case, that's what we're there for.

It is a bit of an adjustment here, isn't it? But those skills definitely seem like you ought to be able to find something to do here. I think teaching would be a pretty good option. I'm looking at going back to school...I didn't really get to do much of it at home.

I believe someone recommended to me that I check out the university. ...maybe that someone could look in that direction, too. I'm just saying.

( Also, she may or may not give him any credit for it, but she may have decided that she probably should go back to school, at least part time, just to keep her mind sharp while she's here. Since she's 99.9% sure the credits won't be transferable to MIT back home, she's just going to study another science just to study it. Maybe astrophysics; she likes that one. )

Additionally, I'll keep an eye out for the physical therapist thing, too. :(

[ In a tone of mild complaint, ] You're the first person to ever tell me I haven't spent enough years in school.

Thanks. I can put together a reasonable rehab schedule from reference materials, but I'd really like to get my leg back to full functioning, and there's a critical window for recovery.

[ That's... kind of charming. ]

We still use those. Have you had to put it into practice?

[ He asks this casually, but it's basically Reid automatically fishing for any implications of crimes that the BAU should be aware of. It's hardly relevant here, but that's going to be a hard habit to break. ]

There's no such thing as to "enough years" in school if you like learning. The only people who put a cap on that sort of thing are people who wouldn't get the appeal anyway. But in this case, I meant you mentioned teaching, maybe you should give that a shot.

Are you in a lot of pain?

( Because she could potentially call in a favor from her Alpha, if so... Maybe. )

I'm sure the hospital has someone on staff that could point you in the right direction, either way.

I don't know, you don't think I could use a seventh degree? [ He sounds simultaneously speculative and a little snide. That's how you know Reid is getting more comfortable with you -- you get to see his very, very dry sense of humor. ] I'm not sure what... I would teach.

[ That's a more realistic question, at least.

As for pain-- getting Spencer to admit when he has a problem is worse than tooth-pulling. ] I'm fine. But I'd like to be able to do more than hobble away if I encounter someone armed.

I'll have to look into it.

Is this place really as crime-free as the advertising materials made it seem? [ He's seriously been wondering. ]

( She finds it incredibly amusing, though. So this works for her. )

Teach something in the criminal justice field. You know?

( Lydia will take that as a yes. Maybe next time she sees Scott, she'll feel it out. )

[ More honestly, ] It's uh, crossed my mind. But I should probably teach. I could do a case review seminar?

[ A short pause. Then he blurts out what he'd been thinking earlier, ] If I do, do you want to be my TA? I can take care of all the grading and course materials. I anticipate my primary difficulty being interfacing with the student population in... a way that doesn't make me seem like a complete weirdo.

( In spite of herself, Lydia has to pause to smirk because, okay, that's the most adorable reason to be asked to be a TA ever, probably. )

[ He lets out a breath now that all the excuses are over with. Good. Okay. Spencer just hates asking for help. But he's self-aware to know that other people, and especially the average college student, find him absurd.

He remembers all the blank faces he got last time he went with Rossi... Yup. ]

Thank you, [ he says wryly. ] I started college when I was twelve. I... have no idea how to relate to them. [ He tries not to bring that up too much because people tend to interpret it as bragging, but he already thinks Lydia will get it. ]

[ Uh... huh. Reid doesn't believe in prying for its own sake, so he leaves that alone, but he definitely notices. ]

Yeah. I'm skeptical, but if they're selecting for compliance with the city mission, they might be able to manage it.

[ His eyebrows go up. ]

Um... no. Not at all. My goal isn't to treat anyone, but to catch criminals.
